"Fedora is definitely a success story ... it's a necessity that culture opens up to society, also economically". That anchors it more in society again, instead of remaining too much in the ivory tower and depending only on state subsidies, says Alexander Neef, Director General of the Paris Opera since September 2020.

The Finnish National Opera and Ballet’s XR Stage Project has received the international FEDORA Next Stage Grant. The grant was launched in 2021 by FEDORA and Opera Europa to trigger change and recovery in the opera and dance sector. The grant provides financial support and skills development to boost innovation through sustainability, inclusivity, and digital transformation.
La plateforme FEDORA promeut le renouveau du ballet et de l’opéra en soutenant 31 organisations dans 15 pays. Elle bénéficie de fonds européens depuis 2017, à raison de 2 millions d’euros pour la période 2017-2021, puis 2,1 millions pour 2022-2024.
Like Flesh de Sivan Eldar sera donné du 21 au 28 janvier à l’Opéra de Lille. Le spectacle, qui a remporté le Prix FEDORA Opera, partira ensuite à l’Opéra de Montpellier du 10 au 13 février, puis sera joué à l’Opéra National de Lorraine à la rentrée de septembre. Like Flesh s’annonce comme un grand événement lyrique, technologique et poétique!

FEDORA's President, Jérôme-François Zieseniss, describes the organisation as "an association made up of philanthropists from all over Europe" which "aims at supporting the renewal of opera and dance". The emphasis is on new work, co-productions and innovation, and prizes are awarded under four headings: opera, dance, education and digital.

A new way of sponsoring arts.
Fedora, a European non-profit founded in 2014 by Jérôme-François Zieseniss, has invested in a new online platform dedicated to opera and ballet projects. "It's about creating communities around projects in the making." Gänz says, "Our goal is to say that philanthropy isn't just for big companies and foundations or the wealthy. Everyone can make a difference."
Fedora's initiative to innovate in opera and ballet funding might just be essential to the long-term survival of the artforms in Europe amidst a climate of decreasing public funding for the arts.
It could also provide answers to getting younger audiences in the door, seeing work with which they can personally connect.
So far at least, Fedora's list of 85 member opera houses, festivals and ballet companies seems to suggest that the importance of finding new audiences and new funding sources is a topic on the minds of many in ballet and opera.

La particularité de ce prix, c’est qu’il ne couronne pas la meilleure production vue dans l’année mais orchestre un saut dans l’inconnu: il s’agit de faciliter un spectacle à venir. Le prix a pour mécènes Van Cleef & Arpels pour le ballet et Generali pour l’opéra.
Opéra : Fedora, soutien à la création en Europe
"Cette plateforme engage le public dans des projets artistiques" explique à l'AFP la directrice de FEDORA, Edilia Gänz. "C'est un peu la démocratisation du mécénat; tout le monde peut faire une différence." En échange, le donateur a accès aux coulisses ou à une répétition.
L'impact ne reste-t-il pas limité vu le coût élevé notamment des productions d'opéra? Certes, "mais le but est aussi d'attirer un nouveau public, notamment jeune, en l'impliquant dès la conception des projets artistiques", selon Mme Gänz.
„Die Risikobereitschaft für innovative Produktionen und unbekanntere Künstler nimmt dann ab“, sagt Gänz. Hier kommt Fedora mit den zusätzlichen Fördermitteln ins Spiel. Sponsoring durch Unternehmen, für das sich manches Opernhaus früher zu fein war, soll nicht mehr tabu sein. Die Organisation lobt jährlich drei Preise aus: einen für eine Opernproduktion, dotiert mit 150 000 Euro vom italienischen Versicherer Generali, einen Ballettpreis vom französischen Schmuckhersteller Van Cleef & Arpels für 100 000 Euro und neuerdings einen dritten Preis für 50 000 Euro zugunsten von Projekten zur „interkulturellen Verständigung und sozialen Integration“, zu dessen Sponsoren auch deutsche Unternehmen wie Graf von Faber-Castell oder das Datenunternehmen Drooms gehören.

Über einen der beiden Letzteren freut sich das Theater Magdeburg mit seiner Puppentheater-Oper "The True Story of King Kong", die sich interdisziplinär dem Fremden, dem Andersartigen widmet und dafür die meisten Publikumsstimmen auf der neuen Fedora-Plattform erhielt. Diese umfasst 19 Opern- und Ballettorganisationen in 13 europäischen Ländern, mit zwei Millionen Euro kofinanziert durch das Programm Kreatives Europa der Europäischen Union.

Depuis 2018, l'association européenne FEDORA utilise le "crowdfunding" pour compléter le financement de créations mondiales pour 85 maisons d'opéra dans 21 pays.
Si les Prix Fedora sont dotés grâce à Van Cleef & Arpels (100.000 euros) et Generali (150.000 euros), chacun peut voter en amont pour son projet préféré puis, à partir de 5 euros, faire un don en ligne à l'un des 11 projets nominés.
