On June 19th 2024 two very special events took place in the Apollosaal of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. On the one hand the General Assembly of the Freunde und Förderer der Staatsoper Unter den Linden (Friends & Supporters) and the presentation of the book "Staatsoper Unter den Linden 2017 - 2024" which summarizes the productions, new formats and the main focus points of the time of Matthias Schulz as Intendant / Artistic Director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Already in 2022 new event was established by the Staatsoper Unter den Linden with the financial support of the Friends & Supporters: "Sustainable Listening". "Sustainable Listening" is now an integral part of the programme of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Furthermore, there are musicians of the Staatskapelle performing in the Orchestra of Change, which is a German wide ensemble of musicians who are committed to climate protection and sustainability in music and support a reforestation project in Madagascar.
The new Intendant / Artistic Director Elisabeth Sobotka will continue the great work towards more sustainability and awareness. Already in the next season – her first at the Staatsoper – an opera will premiere that touches the topic of climate change. Some facts about "Cassandra":

Sandra presents the results of her research on the melting polar ice caps in the form of stand-up comedy and hopes in this way to sensitize people to the alarming situation of our planet. While on the one hand applauded for her efforts, she is also constantly confronted with sceptical questions. Her warnings go unheard even in her own family, as is true of the mythical figure Cassandra who predicts the destruction of Troy in flames. The God Apollo grants her visionary powers, but because she refuses to give into his attempts to seduce her, he ensures that no one believes her prophecies. In this opera, which premiered in Brussels in 2023, composer Bernard Foccroulle and librettist Matthew Jocelyn cleverly combine the figures of the ancient prophetess and the popular researcher in this stirring and touching opera. With Marie-Eve Signeyrole’s cinematic production, this very modern opera will be performed for the very first time in the German-speaking world.

Opera in 13 scenes with a prologue (2023)
Music from Bernard Foccroulle
Text from Matthew Jocelyn

As usual the event was supported by music performed by an emerging artist this time with an experienced singer: Rebecka Wallroth, a soprano from the International Opera Studio and the baritone Michael Volle.
