The Sound Voice Project, winner of the FEDORA Digital Prize 2023 with the support of Kearney, global management consulting firm, explores the intrinsic value of the human voice through an immersive digital opera installation premiere that took place on 14 November at the Linbury Theatre of the Royal Opera House in London.

Collaborating with healthcare professionals, biomedical researchers and technology experts, this project brings to life the stories of individuals who have lost their voices, while redefining opera for a modern audience. This immersive sound installation, dedicated to themes of voice and identity, illustrates the extent to which digital technology can push the boundaries of opera.

This experience is accessible to audiences aged 12 and over, and will be presented in English, with subtitles displayed to ensure full comprehension by all spectators. Performances run from 14 to 20 November 2024.

Hannah Conway, founder of The Sound Project, talks about the importance of the Prize in developing the project. "Winning the FEDORA Digital Prize has been a great honour. I am so thrilled this work has been celebrated by FEDORA, on a European stage - a piece that most importantly platforms voices and narratives rarely heard in opera. Thank you for your support over the past two years, I hope that many more audiences will see The Sound Voice Project and reflect upon what it truly means to have a voice and think about which voices are given the stage."

The FEDORA Digital Prize: Revolutionising Opera and Dance through Digital Transformation

In its commitment to support the renewal of opera and dance across Europe, we have championed artistic innovation since 2013. Through our Prizes Biennale, FEDORA rewards emerging talent in Opera, Dance and Education, alongside a dedicated Digital Prize aimed at supporting innovations harnessing cutting-edge technologies. Supported by Kearney and in collaboration with the IMZ - International Music + Media Centre, the FEDORA Digital Prize bridges the worlds of performing arts and technology, fostering innovative works that leverage virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and immersive experiences to reimagine and redefine this artistic genre.

According to Richard Forrest, Head of Europe at Kearney: “Digital innovation is important to encourage the emergence of multiple new formats that can be adapted to different configurations, immersive and reinventing ways of interacting with audiences. This is just as important in the arts as in business: in both cases, changing how we interact with the world around us opens new avenues for expression.”

Bringing Projects to Life

The success of The Sound Voice Project demonstrates the tangible impact of our association and Kearney's support in advancing new narratives and emerging artists in contemporary opera. Since winning the FEDORA Digital Prize, The Sound Voice Project has so far experienced a remarkable journey. In February 2024, the project won the first prize of the Pitching Sessions for Sunny Side of the Doc at the IMZ Avant Premiere Music + Media Market in Berlin. In March, it was presented at the Copenhagen Documentary Festival. In May, The Sound Voice Project was awarded the prestigious Classical:NEXT Innovation Award in Berlin, marking international recognition for its impact and innovation.

The Sound Voice Project is the third FEDORA Digital Prize winner, following Laila led by the Finnish National Opera & Ballet in 2020 - an interactive augmented reality experience inviting the audience to shape the narrative of a digital “diva” while exploring the challenges of AI and technology of tomorrow's art - and Out of the Ordinary led by the Irish National Opera in 202 - a pioneering virtual reality community opera created with and for Irish communities.

According to our president Stéphane Argyropoulos: "The Sound Voice Project demonstrates how digital technology can support creativity and open up new channels for dialogue with audiences. We are proud to support this project, which confirms the essential role of this Digital Prize in reinventing opera and dance making these art forms more accessible to an ever wider audience.”
