Michael Gallen

Short Bio

Michael Gallen is an Irish composer, writer and performer. His work has been performed by several leading Irish and international ensembles. A natural crosser of boundaries, he has been involved in several high-profile collaborations in dance, theatre and film, including Session, a creation with dance artists Colin Dunne and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui which toured the main stages of Europe in 2019. His operatic oeuvre to date includes "At a Loss", a film-opera commissioned by Irish National Opera which will premiere in December 2020.

Michael is Artistic Director of Straymaker and the lead artist on Elsewhere, bringing together a team of open-minded and gifted collaborators to join him on a unique creative journey. In research for the opera Michael has worked closely with experts in psychiatric history and spent two months in residence at the Malévoz Psychiatric Hospital in Switzerland. The extensive support given to the project thus far is testament to his artistic integrity and vision.
