Short Bio

Michael McCarthy is the Director of Music Theatre Wales which he co-founded (with Michael Rafferty) in 1988. He has directed many of its award-winning productions and was awarded an MBE in 2016. Recent awards for MTW productions include the Fedora Generali prize in 2019 for Philip Venables' Denis & Katya, a co-commission with Opera Philadelphia and Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier. Michael commissioned the young people's consultation in 2019 which led to the development of Future Directions and the transformation in MTW's vision and approach. As Artistic Director of Future Directions he takes overall responsibility for the project's shape and delivery, establishing the key partnerships and relationships and overseeing the project's strategic development.
