Short Bio

Shuang Zou, Artistic Director of Beijing Music Festival and opera/theatre director previously trained in the UK. Under her leadership the festival joined co-productions with with leading artists and companies from Western Europe to experiment on new forms of opera/music theatre at the BMF. For example, Muziektheater Transparant’s production of Diary of One who Disappeared by Ivo van Hove and Michel van der Aa 's Eight. As a stage writer/director her work include Music Theatre Songs of Nature for the Klara Festival 2021 and subsequently toured across China, site-specific Opera Orfeo, semi-staged Turandot for Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, The Rake’s Progress for the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Das Rheingold for the GuangZhou Symphony Orchestra. Her theatre work include Blithe Spirit, as well as Happy Days for the National Theatre of China. In 2019, she was nominated for the ‘Newcomer’ award by International Opera Awards and for Classical Next ‘Innovation Award’.
