Teatro Real, (Royal Opera of Madrid), is an independently-run public foundation with significant social involvement in its governing and funding bodies, and the participation —at state, regional and local level— of the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the Regional Government of Madrid and Madrid City Council. It is deemed Spain’s major institution for the musical and performing arts, and is the leading national opera house, with significant and growing global outreach.
Its artistic programming strives for excellence, taking in both a traditional and contemporary lyrical repertoire with special attention to recovering Spanish heritage. Its main goals include attracting new audiences, and appealing to young people in particular.
With the King and Queen of Spain as its honorary presidents, the Theatre’s main governing body is its Board of Governors. The Board chooses its own President and President of the Executive Committee, at the proposal of the Spanish Minister for Culture and Sports.
For the 2024/25 season, Teatro Real presents 19 titles, 10 of which will be seen in our theatre for the first time, including a world premiere, and renewed versions of repertory titles. There will be three major dance performances, recitals, concerts, a chamber music series and an extensive pedagogical program among other activities. A devotion to musical excellence, exploring paths to new audiences and the spirit of innovation inspire our programming, building on the legacy of recent years with a commitment to many more
Sustaining Teatro Real means embarking on an exciting project dedicated to promoting high-quality opera, fostering new creation, and preserving the rich national and international artistic heritage. Supporting our mission contributes to designing a new landscape for the cultural scene, making opera accessible to a wider and a younger audience. We encourage companies and individuals to play a leading role in shaping together a better world for opera and the performing arts.
My opera player, Teatro Real's video platform, includes more than 300 opera, ballet and concert titles from more than 50 theaters and festivals around the world. In these five years of existence, it has become the only performing arts platform with all its content subtitled in Spanish, being considered for the third consecutive year, the best digital initiative of performing arts in Spain by the Observatorio de la Cultura.
