Designed by the neoclassical architect Giuseppe Piermarini, the Teatro alla Scala opened in 1778 with Salieri's L'Europa riconsciuta. With the advent of Rossini it was to become the appointed place of Italian opera and later on included ballet. In 1839, Oberto Conte di San Bonifacio inaugurated the cycle of premières by Verdi including Nabucco, Otello and Falstaff. Bellini, Donizetti and Puccini also premiered here their masterworks. Toscanini introduced radical reform both in its organizational and artistic aspects. The musical leadership was later taken by de Sabata, Gavazzeni, Abbado, Muti, Barenboim; Callas, di Stefano and Pavarotti, are just some of the singers whose career flourished here and Visconti, Zeffirelli, Strehler, Ronconi, Chéreau are among them. The Musical Director Riccardo Chailly and CEO and Artistic Director Alexander Pereira reinvigorated the Italian tradition of La Scala by rediscovering the richness and complexity of the Italian repertoire.
