Music Theatre Wales
Our mission is to present opera as a contemporary form which speaks to society now, exploring new ways of creating and presenting opera as storytelling in music, working with artists and communities who are new to opera, creating new formats and reaching new audiences. Music Theatre Wales (MTW) exists to breathe new life into opera, presenting it as storytelling in music and seeking to revitalise opera as a universally accessible and expressive activity. We nurture artists who will create the opera of the future and present opera in imaginative ways that will help change the deeply entrenched preconceptions of what opera is and can be. We are asking: What is Opera? Who is making it? and Who is it for?
For over 40 years, MTW has been a force for change and development in opera in the UK, creating transformational opportunities for artists and audiences to create and access contemporary opera, often for the first time.
With a history of creating innovative work, we have applied this thinking to ourselves – asking what value can we bring to society as makers of new opera? Our answer is to re-imagine what opera is and create work that truly reflects Wales and the UK as it now is. We will achieve this by asking the very artists and communities who have been ignored or excluded from opera to bring their skills, vision, stories and music to a form which is crying out for a new direction and a new audience. We aim to bring opera back in touch with more people and more communities.
Quite simply, we are Re-Imagining Opera.
DISCOVER OUR ON-GOING SEASON
This season at Music Theatre Wales includes two innovative Digital Opera Shorts from our New Directions initiative; a live Welsh language multidisciplinary production called 'Bwystfilod Aflan', based on reactions to poet Prosser Rhys's controversial crown-winning poem; and two new Street Art Operas. Additionally, we are launching a new chapter in our Future Directions project with Hijinx Theatre for neurodiverse young people, as well as a young music creators programme in collaboration with Sinfonia Cymru.

ABOUT "NEW DIRECTIONS 'GRIEF' & 'INTERBEING'"
In 2024, Music Theatre Wales unveils two Digital Opera Shorts from our New Directions programme. Experience GRIEF by Francesca Amewudah-Rivers and Connor Allen, and interbeing by Simmy Singh and ASHA. New Directions re-imagines opera by bringing together new artists from diverse storytelling backgrounds to create multidisciplinary works. These digital operas blend music, story, and visuals, challenging traditional opera forms and revitalizing its identity.
