And Now, Dance !
"And Now, Dance!" is a cooperation project aimed at Algerian youth, focusing on training and creation within the dance sector, structured around the development of two pieces of choreography.

Presentation

Emilio Calcagno's first collaboration with the Maghreb dates back twenty years ago during the debut of his work "Les 4 Saisons ou le Mariage du Loup" at the inauguration of the Tunis Opera. Last year, recognizing a demand for choreographic training, Calcagno initiated an international cooperation project involving Algeria, Italy, and France, titled "And Now, Dance!" The project, spanning from 2024 to 2026, encompasses a year-long program focusing on training and artistic creation, culminating in presentations across all three countries.

Auditions were conducted on November 8th and 9th, 2023, at the French Institute in Algiers, selecting 30 apprentices dancers, primarily from self-taught or urban dance backgrounds.

The training program consists of ten modules in 2024, followed by sessions in 2025, concluding in March with the collaboration of 12 selected dancers on the creation of two 30-minute pieces. The first piece reinterprets the renowned Russian ballet "Les Noces," set to Stravinsky's music, while the second, "Soyez les bienvenus," delves into the dreams and aspirations of Algerian youth, featuring electronic music and a potential collaboration with an Algerian composer.

This program will be presented at the National Theater of Maubeuge, preceded by awareness-raising and community engagement activities.

Other participants restaging Sylvain Groud's "L'oubli" under the directorship of the director of the National Choreographic Center of Roubaix. Rehearsals will take place for 15 days in Algeria and another 15 days in Roubaix, with the outcome presented in autumn 2025 at the National Choreographic Center of Roubaix alongside the creative program at the National Stage of Maubeuge.

Additionally, the project includes dedicated time for the development of entrepreneurial skills among participants, aiming to empower Algerian dancers to develop their unique styles and projects within their own territory.
