Drottningholms Slottsteater

Rokokomania (landscape)
The rich history of the 18th century theater is brought to life through spectacular, newly made costumes with a direct connection to the theater and its historical activities. In the children's production, they are a supporting element as they are worn by the participating singers and dancers.

Presentation

The Drottningholm Court Theater was completed in 1766 and has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1991 as an inalienable cultural heritage for humanity. The theater has a magnificent history and is full of forgotten and hidden treasures.

Through a collaboration with the Tailor Academy in Gothenburg, we let the theater come to life through spectacular costumes that describe the theater and its history. We will meet the Swedish theater king Gustav III and the court costume used in the theater during his time. We will also meet the Commedia dell Arte’s Harlequin and Harlequina, the Opera Prima donna, the Hero Tenor, the 18th century's fondness for Chinese paraphernalia and sea shells, the director (with a puppet theater in her skirt), we will see the theater that has been bleached by the ravages of time, the summer theater in all its splendor (Drottningholm's Court Theater was only used in the summer), what was worn as underwear, 18th century disco-style dancing masters with large sequins sparkling in the candlelight, marbling, and layers upon layers of clothing.

The inspiration is the Theater itself with its treasures of patterns that can be found in the curtains, on wallpaper and in decorations as well as in the costumes worn and in the people who performed on stage, and in the audience at the court theatre. The artistic vision is to give the young audience of today an artistic, playful introduction to the historical theater and its forms of expression. We want to awake the desire to learn more and to take part in the world of opera and dance.
