"The Little Bear and the Ice Mountain" is a contemporary civic opera project for kids aged 6-14. The production aims to educate and raise awareness about glacier melting through captivating storytelling, original composition, interactive elements and an educational program for schools and families.

Presentation

The idea of offering a civic opera to the youngest audience arises from the will to stage a narrative of contemporary reality, conveying it through the layered and timeless languages of opera. La Fenice and AsLiCo are collaborating and adding their know-how in the cultural and educational sector to bring forward an initiative that educates and stimulates children in building a robust, healthy and eco-friendly society.

Through an original composition featuring music by Giovanni Sollima and libretto by Giancarlo De Cataldo, elementary/middle schools and families have the opportunity to experience an opera tailored specifically for them. The artistic creation is supported from the conceptual phase by the scientific input of the Polar Sciences Institute, a crucial partner also in the development of the educational and musical framework.

The show's debut, scheduled for January 2026 on the occasion of the 30th Opera domani edition, marks just one step in a broader process of audience engagement and education. The programme throughout the 2025/2026 school year involves teachers in training sessions, classroom activities with students, and workshops for families, culminating in the performances themselves. In line with the Opera domani format, the performance involves the audience through interactions, such as choirs, props, and choreographies, making the spectators true protagonists of the show and carriers of its message.

The opera unfolds with mesmerizing music, colorful visuals, and interactive elements ensuring that children remain fully engaged throughout. Through the protagonist's adventures, they learn about the delicate balance of nature, the impact of human activities on the environment, and the importance of conservation efforts.

The project serves as more than just a theatrical production; it's a multifaceted educational, civic and cultural initiative, enhancing the learning experience beyond the theater.

Artistic Team

The artistic team for the project comprises renowned composer Giovanni Sollima and acclaimed writer Giancarlo De Cataldo, who have previous successful collaboration history. Sollima, recognized for his innovative compositions blending classical and contemporary elements, brings his unique musical vision to the project blending with De Cataldo storytelling expertise.
