Presentation
Since its creation at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin in 1976 the opera by the Japanese composer Toshiro Mayuzumi has strangely never been staged in Europe again. Because one of the principal goals of a dynamic and ambitious opera house is to give life to the best but still unknown works of the last fifty years, it has been very clear to us that we have to rediscover this wonderful score and to propose its French premiere in my first artistic season at the head of the Opéra national de Strasbourg. Close friends during years, it’s only after Mishima’s suicide in 1970 that Mayuzumi started to work on an opera based on one of the most beautiful novels of the great and world known writer. Mixing the beauty of the past – Kinkakuji, the zen Golden Pavilion in Kyoto built before 1400 – and the complex and tragic life of a young monk who finally decided in 1950 to burn the national monument which was for him the highest representation of the beauty on earth. Comissioned by the Deutsche Oper, the opera by Toshiro Mayuzumi is fed by the most recent developments of the European clasical music of his time, gives the chorus a Greek tragedy importance and is fully inhabited by a mix of East and West philosophy.
