Presentation
The opening program of season 2017/18 consists of 3 new creations by 4 choreographers; young dance makers Edward Clug and Medhi Walerski and NDTs Sol León and Paul Lightfoot. Together these works showcase the incredible artistic range of the company and the choreographers it commissions.
It’s the first time Clug will create a piece for NDT 1. Previously, Clug made 2 works with the young dancers of NDT 2 and is now given the chance to premiere a work with NDT 1. In 2015 Clug debuted with a short creation, Mutual Comfort, a detailed and sharply defined choreography. The sober-ranging mutual comfort is a diverse series of meetings between duos and trios who, in their perfection and express something unreal. De Volkskrant. The piece was also presented in Singapore, Warsaw, Brno and London.
Former NDT dancer Medhi Walerski made his debut as a choreographer with Mammatus (2008) for NDT 2. This was followed by five more pieces for the company, both NDT 1 and NDT 2. Some of them were also presented in Germany, Los Angeles, Beijng, Suzhou and Shanghai. He’s a keeper this Walerski . TROUW
The hugely productive choreographic duo León and Lightfoot started creating together 26 years ago and have created over 50 pieces for NDT. Their choreographies can be seen as the epitome of a transdisciplinary performance where dance, theatre, film and music effortlessly come together to melt into a painterly Gesamtkunstwerk. Their creations are presented in cultural capitals across the globe, from Madrid to Melbourne, and from Stuttgart to Singapore and New York.
The creation period for this program will not commence until Spring 2017, little is known about the approach for the three new creations. NDT’s core artistic value lies in creating its own choreographies and building an extensive repertoire of works. Therefore, the focus of each program will be on the combination of makers and how they bring their own and the dancer’s artistic range to the fore.
