The Tree, Fragments of poetics on fire © Gao Xingjian i
Presentation
"THE TREE [fragments of poetics on fire] will be the last creation of choreographer Carolyn Carlson for her Company.
After eau (2008, CCN Roubaix/Lille Opera), Pneuma (2014, Bordeaux Opera Ballet) and Now (2014, Théâtre national Chaillot-Paris), it completes the cycle of Carolyn Carlson’s pieces inspired by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard. In 2021 Carolyn Carlson chooses the poetic and symbolic power of flames and ashes, incorporated with the complexity of the natural elements as inspirations.
A poetic reflection on humanity and nature, a dreamlike vision that will give life to a powerful and vital expression of love for nature on the edge of collapse, with a rebirth like the phoenix born from its ashes.
Visual artist Gao Xingjian will transcend the scenography with his abstract ink paintings projected on stage ; and lighting designer Rémi Nicolas, known for his way of treating lights as a part of the set, will illuminate the dancers and the stage with counterpoints and neon lights.
In 7 sequences recalling centuries-old Nordic mythologies from the KALEVALA (Finnish saga), 9 virtuoso dancers will become what we have departed from our sources of primal instincts: the timeless awareness of endless harmony with nature, the inner flames that feed and consume the human soul and the universal flame of love.
Echoing nature and its protean essence, the multifaceted experienced artists will create a pluralistic and universal work, including dance, philosophy, poetry, lights and paintings in a contemporary viewpoint.
