About the Project

The meeting of choreographer Damien Jalet and visual artist Kohei Nawa sparked an immediate artistic bond. What brought them together certainly has to do with the chemistry of matter exuding from the shifting sculptures of the latter and the gestural language of the former. Damien Jalet has traveled around the world, infusing his pieces with inspirations drawn from the rituals and mythologies of various places. Kohei Nawa explores materials and techniques through his sculptures and installations which convey an organic outlook on the world.

Vessel – the previous piece coproduced by Chaillot-Théâtre national de Danse and the result of the collaboration between the two artists – related two levels of the world’s creation according to Japanese mythology: the abysses and the world above clouds. Planet - which translates as "to wander" in ancient Greek - [wanderer], the second installment of this diptych, unfolds in the “heartland of reeds”, in other words, in our world. Here, glittering black sand – a star or meteorite dust – shapes the landscape, in turn altered surreptitiously by the presence of bodies. Planet [wanderer] finds the dancers’ bodies – motionless or in motion – moving around a metaphoric and poetic zone where every gesture seems to alter tremendously their relationship to the world.

Planet [wanderer] will travel throughout Europe and Asia. Committed to protecting the environment, Chaillot-Théâtre National de la Danse strives to limit the carbon footprint of its international tours. Accordingly, Chaillot wishes to create a replica of the outstanding set designed by Kohei Nawa, for its European tour. The first set designed in Japan will be used for the Asia tour. The second one made in France in the scene shops of Opéra de Rouen Normandie will be dedicated to the European continent and travel to France, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria and the UK.
