LOD Muziektheater - Zelle © Masao Yamamoto i
'ZELLE, Wenn es dunkel wird' is an invitation to travel together to the limits of the seeable, the hearable, the comprehensible and imagine the truth of the world which lies beyond perceived reality. A chamber opera by British-Chinese composer and director Jamie Man/ 文珮玲 and Swiss author Peter Stamm.
Together with Swiss writer Peter Stamm, British-Chinese artist and composer Jamie Man/ 文珮玲 creates ZELLE, Wenn es dunkel wird, a new chamber opera for LOD muziektheater (Ghent, BE).
When an interrogation of a woman suspected of killing her own children only leads to more questions, time passes, the fog thickens and darkness falls as it becomes harder and harder to find what was never lost.
A constellation of four human voices (Natascha Young, Steve Katona, Ryoko Aoki & Jackie Janssens) meets the raw physicality of broken guitars, percussion and electronics (AskoISchönberg) in an immersive resurrection of the imagination via the ancient ritual of noh theatre. A music 'for the ears of the skin' expresses with the sheer force of sound and light what is tragically and organically human as we traverse freely the gaps between the imaginary, the symbolic and the real.
Jamie Man (°1987) is a London born and based composer and conductor. Her work is primarily concerned with music and the poetic mystery of what we are as human beings. Her first opera, commissioned by the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, premiered in 2016. In 2018 she was composer in residence at LOD music theatre in Ghent. Together with Swiss writer Peter Stamm she creates ZELLE, Wenn es dunkel wird, a new chamber opera for LOD that stems from the acceptance that reality is full of contradictions. It is a game of voices and mismatch between what is heard, seen, expected, ephemeral and eternal.
ZELLE, Wenn es dunkel wird brings together an interesting and unique mix of genres, voices and cultural backgrounds. ZELLE is an international project, supported by many different partners across Europe. With your support, the project will be able to perform internationally and attract different audiences.
