This project is a two week celebration of the relationship between composers and choreographers, part of Sadler’s Wells’ Composer Series, which partners contemporary composer’s music with exceptional choreographers to create new works.

About the Project

We are delighted to be planning a new project as part of our Composer Series. This work will feature new dance commissions set to new music from American composer Nico Muhly, and feature new choreography by Justin Peck, Michael Keegan-Dolan, Jules Cunningham and one other choreographer, yet to be decided. It will also be the first time New York City Ballet will be performing at Sadler's Wells.

This project is part of the Composer series at Sadler’s Wells. This series of commissions will showcase the work of the most exciting composers working internationally today.

The Nico Muhly commission is an important continuation of this ambitious series. Collaboration between artforms is incredibly important – bringing in new audiences, sparking creative partnerships and starting conversations.

Why should you support us?

All work presented will make significant contributions to both dance and music. Muhly, whose influences range from American minimalism to the Anglican choral tradition, fashions these diverse influences into a distinctive and authentic voice. The collaboration between this unique young composer and three choreographers with very contrasting styles, at different stages in their careers will be both experimental and risk-taking. By supporting this project, you are helping bring this team of unique artists to the London stage, and in doing so, introducing new audiences to their work.

Who are we?

Sadler's Wells is a world-leading creative organisation, dedicated to dance in all its forms. We commission, present and produce more dance than any other theatre in the world. We offer an innovative, year-round programme of live and online performances and learning activities. Audiences of over half a million come to Sadler’s Wells’ three London stages each year. Many more enjoy touring productions at venues across the UK and around the world. This is where people come together, nationally and internationally, to create and experience dance and be inspired.

New York City Ballet is one of the foremost dance companies in the world, with a roster of spectacular dancers and an unparalleled repertory. Justin Peck is the current Resident Choreographer at NYCB. This project will present a rare opportunity for UK and European audiences to see New York City Ballet perform outside the US.

Nico Muhly is the composer on this project. He has written more than 80 works for the concert stage including operas. He is also part of the record label Bedroom Community, which released his first two albums, Speaks Volumes (2006) and Mothertongue (2008). He is a unique and creative collaborator, which is why he has been chosen to compose these pieces.

Justin Peck joined New York City Ballet as a dancer in 2006. After the creation of his acclaimed ballet Everywhere We Go, he was appointed as Resident Choreographer of New York City Ballet. Peck has created over 30 ballets, 17 of those for New York City Ballet, therefore is in the perfect position to lead our co-producing partner in the second week of this project.

Michael Keegan-Dolan is an Associate Artist with Sadler’s Wells Theatre. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre. His productions for Fabulous Beast include The Rite of Spring, Helen + Hell, and Rian. As a choreographer whose work is steeped in Irish culture, history and legends, he is creating a piece for this project with a beautiful, dark composition.

Jules Cunningham is a New Wave Associate at Sadler’s Wells, an Associate Artist at DanceEast and the choreographer and director of Slant, another piece in this project. Julie Cunningham & Company have created 10 works including a new creation for Dance Umbrella Festival and a commissioned work for Sadler's Wells Theatre.
