Dawn to Dusk © Garsington Opera i
Follow the journey of a young person living in Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and the UK – from Dawn to Dusk. Through film and new technology, young people will co-create a hybrid live/digital youth opera, telling their stories through their eyes.
Dawn to Dusk supports intercultural dialogue using new digital technology. More than 200 young people aged 9-18 connect via shared virtual space, exchanging ideas, developing new skills, performing and learning from each other. A touring digital installation piece taking footage from each interpretation creates a legacy for the project.
Who we are
Garsington Opera’s partners and close collaborators are: Amwaj Choir, Hebron, Palestine; Al-Farah Choir, Damascus, Syria; Alsama Project, Lebanon; Materelettrica - conservatorio di Matera, Matera, Italy; Learning@TheGrange, Grange Festival, Hampshire, UK; and MCC Foundation, London, UK.
How it works
Dawn to Dusk turns conventional opera on its head, inviting partners to interpret the commissioned score and libretto, creating a version of the work unique to their setting and personal experience.
Why it matters
Young people have a desire for global connection, inclusivity and a sense of belonging. Digital technology establishes creative relationships between young people from different cultures who cannot be together. In the past, opening up channels of communication leading to positive change has taken generations. Now we can achieve dynamic interaction through this innovative work in a digital instant.
The project provides a platform for participants to record and share their hope for the future – and for some, hope is the only thing that sustains them from one day to the next. Within their films we will see contrasting experiences mirrored; we will also recognise the similarities. Our goal is to maintain an open, creative dialogue, so people will understand what unites them.
Be the difference
Your support is crucial to ensure their stories are told!
When you support Dawn to Dusk, you will give young people a voice. Some participants live in challenging circumstances with no other outlet to tell their story.
Your support will give them a platform for self-expression through opera, as well as the opportunity to connect and engage with other young people in different countries.
See how the impact grows, as we reach each level along the way:
• €500 will mean more than 200 young people can take part in a one day music composition workshop
• €1,000 will support a two day workshop on devising an opera for all participants
• €2,500 will deliver the Opera Pack, enabling each group of young people to create and perform their own version of the opera. This includes the score, lyric sheets, learning tracks, a film to form part of the backdrop of the production, and guidance on all aspects of staging the opera
• €3,500 will bring the groups together online for key moments in the rehearsal process, and pay for a graphic designer, set designer and director to produce digital materials supporting the young people’s creative expression
• €5,000 will see the final installation piece on display at Garsington Opera’s new Arts Hub, providing a high profile platform, and sharing the collective voice and vision of all participants
Help us reach our target of €5,000 and make a difference today!
Garsington Opera would like to thank FEDORA for this opportunity to raise vital funding for Dawn to Dusk. Should we be successful in exceeding the target, we have already identified areas for further support within the project.
Garsington Opera promotes excellence and engages the best performers from around the world, while championing emerging singing talent from the UK. During a six-week festival each summer, artists have the opportunity to work with directors and conductors of distinction.
Led by executive director Nicola Creed and under the artistic direction of Douglas Boyd, Garsington Opera has attained international recognition for its productions. Partnerships with the Philharmonia and English Concert orchestras create a framework for employment and underpin musical quality. Their contributions – alongside the vibrancy of the Garsington Opera Chorus – are integral to the festival season. GO challenges perceived barriers to engagement with high-quality opera and is committed to reaching new audiences. In partnership with OperaVision, GO streams performances to a global digital audience, and August 2022 marked GO’s Edinburgh International Festival debut.
Garsington Opera is a unique training ground and spring board for the opera singers of the future. GO’s Young Artists Programme provides the chorus for the Opera Festival each year. Young Artists work closely with Garsington’s Youth Company who will form the UK chorus for Dawn to Dusk.
GO Learning and Participation engages people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in opera through six year-round strands of activity. This important outreach work channels the power of music to enhance wellbeing, thereby transforming lives and communities. For young people in particular, the programme offers a pathway that may begin with workshops and lead to a future career.
GO is using digital technology across all strands of its work, in order to bring opera to the widest possible audience. GO Create: the opera imaginarium is a digital learning resource, that introduces a new generation to opera by participating in the creation of productions, and the technology enables GO to work with partners around the world in ground-breaking collaborations – such as Dawn to Dusk.
Underpinning all of GO’s future activity is the Arts Hub, set to open in spring 2023. This £15 million capital project will create a more resilient cultural sector for the region by contributing much needed purpose-built facilities for professional and community groups. It will be a space to create, whether by a seasoned professional artist or a local child beginning their journey of discovery in the arts. This resource will be unique in an area which is greatly lacking in facilities of this kind. The Arts Hub is actively and passionately supported by local schools, arts organisations, councillors and charities, all of whom will be able to use the space not only for their own creation, but also to learn and perform alongside Garsington Opera Young Artists and experienced professionals. The project represents Garsington Opera’s largest capital investment, creating enormous opportunities for the organisation and community for the next 125 years.
