“Séisme” is an new interactive opus about the conversation between humans and the Earth. Through poetry, music, vibrations, interactive flooring and artificial intelligence, the piece invites its audience to communicate with the ground we all walk on, creating a participative physical and online work of art.

About the Project

Inspired by the events he witnessed, haitian poet Ar Guens Jean Mary explores the impact earthquakes have had on his communities and how humans can treat the earth better. This has led hungarian director Franciska Ery to the idea of dissecting an earthquake into its different stages of formation, and use this as a structure to create a new, interactive opera experience. British and chinese composer Alex Ho is creating a sound world that incorporates Jean Mary's poetry and tech, such as vibrating jackets (called “Subpacs”) and contact microphones to conjure the tremors of the earth and allow the audience not only to hear but also to feel these vibrations. Séisme makes us reflect on humanity's effect on its home and underlines the idea that we always contribute to our shared history, even by existing.

Every presence on the stage will have an effect on the piece. In the end, audience members will have the opportunity to leave voice messages to the earth, which will then be incorporated into the musical texture of the piece, always changing it slightly. Doing so, this “human earthquake” will literally be composed by human voices, collected through audience interaction. While thousands of people will have the opportunity to experience Séisme on the main stage of Montpellier Comédie Opéra, others alla round the globe will also have the chance to follow the evolution of the piece through a digital platform. After each performance, the website will update, depending on how many people have walked on its ground and interacted with it.

Why should you support us?

SEISME is an new immersive and multimedia piece targeting young audiences, but also audiences with a hearing and sight disability.
With the help of FEDORA Platform, the Opéra Orchestre Montpellier is currently raising 12, 000 euros to allow full and active participation of youngest generations to the piece. All donations are welcomed !

*WHAT DIFFERENCE CAN YOU MAKE ?*

WITH 6,000 EUROS :
→ implementation of educational workshops about terrestrial and sound ecology for approximatively 500 scholar kids registered in Priority Education Areas, allowing their participation in the artistic creation process of the piece : drawings included and animated on the digital platform, audio recordings...
→ production of free online access resources such as educational activities, videos, podcasts

WITH 10 000 EUROS :
→ all previous mentioned actions
+ the creation of braille boards Séisme librettos to support visually impaired children and adults experience of the piece
+ 15 more performances fully dedicated to scholars, with a meeting between students and the artists.

Who are we?

Let us tell you in a few lines what the Opéra Orchestre Montpellier Occitanie is :
- simply one of the biggest companies in the center of Montpellier (7th biggest France cities) - with a 200 permanent people team, including 120 artists from the orchestra and the choir,
- 600 amateur musicians or singers (from 6 to 70 years old) registrered each season in our workshops and training programs,
- 150,000 spectators coming to 150 events a season (operas, symphonic and chamber music concerts, escape game, movie concerts, baby activities...),
- events in two main halls (Opéra Comédie and Berlioz), but also in Montpellier metropolis and the Occitanie region,
- Thousands of scholars and students hosted in the season for opened rehearsals and performances,
- 7 artists in residence (composer, conductor, podcaster, director, poet...).
- over 50,000 digital followers (social networks and newsletter subscribers).
- an ambitious search for innovative projects and partnerships with video game or computer science schools

Led since 2013 by general director Valérie Chevalier and 2015 by principal conductor Michael Schønwandt, the Opéra Orchestre national Montpellier Occitanie has established itself as one of the major companies in the French musical landscape.
